As the panic in markets continues, social democrats are lovingly welcoming the masses to their disease and poverty-stricken ideology. Libertarians are doing what they can, but we are outnumbered and out-financed. The taxpayer funded universities are rife with left-wing thought, as worshiping the state is the surest way to obtain large research grants and stable employment.
And to make matters worse, some free market types have started to believe the hype, and have allowed themselves to offer a fig leaf to the interventionists. For example, Stephen Kirchner of the Centre for Independent Studies gave his stamp of approval to “short-term stimulus measures”.
These are uncertain times. Only one thing is sure: government will grow in size and scope, and the recent creation of new vested interests through bailouts and regulations will make promoting freedom even more difficult. It is essential that libertarians remain just as dogmatic in opposing the state as the politicians in Canberra are in supporting it.
